About Us
Exciting is the only way to describe what has become of the optical industry. This constant state of flux has led to blurring of the lines of distinction among manufacturers, laboratories/distributors and retail stores as each is vying to dominate their own market as well as expanding into one another's markets.
Hirsch Optical believes that being Independent is something to be proud of. This permits Hirsch Optical to offer Eyecare Professionals the whole spectrum of the latest and best lens and frame products available.
Our practical hands-on-management approach allows us to stay in touch with the pulse of the industry and continue to offer our customers innovations to develop their business and to stay abreast of the latest trends. This is why we offer seminars, in-office training sessions, promotions, lens and frame package deals and Hirsch's EZ RX online ordering system. Because we allocate resources for systems like EZ Rx and remote tracing, our customers may expect faster turnaround time, job status reports, product availability information and increased accuracy.
In 1978, Hal Rothstein and Ken Mittel established Hirsch Optical Corp., as a full service ophthalmic laboratory in Flushing, New York and soon after moved operations to Westbury, New York.
In 1984, Hirsch Optical moved to Farmingdale, New York in order to expand operations to meet the growing needs of our customer base. This location is excellent for expediting work due to the proximity of all the major courier services.
The new building provided the opportunity for us to design a state of the art production facility encompassing all phases of ophthalmic lens fabrication while retaining the ability to easily modify the layout to embrace new, emerging technologies and processes.
For years, we have implemented one of the few in-house production equipment maintenance programs and the refurbishing of equipment to insure the level of quality Eyecare Professionals have grown to expect and rely on.
In 1993, Hirsch Optical joined Global Optics. This organization consists of non-competing laboratories working together to share ideas and the only group to have a warehouse operation inventorying a wide-ranging lens inventory. This operation coupled with our extensive in-house lens inventory enables us to provide an excellent fulfillment rate to our customers. When unfortunate weather conditions prevail or manufacturer productions issues arise, our Global warehouse can provide us with products that the rest of the country may not be able to obtain.
Around the same time period, we changed over our production systems to utilize the DVI lab software in our continued efforts to use the best technology for our business.
In 1996, Michael Rothstein joined Hirsch Optical full-time.
In 1999, we constructed our cutting edge coating facility which is the home of our proprietary CHAD - Clear, Hard, Anti-Reflective & Durable and RF EnduraEZTM. Expansion of this facility is in the planning stage.
As a result of all of these efforts, Hirsch Optical has been recognized by the industry earning distinctions for being a Top 20 Lab, Certified Advantage Plan Pro Lab Varilux distributor, a Zeiss Partner Lab, a Transitions Platinum Elite Lab and a Shamir ReCreating Perfect Vision Partnering Lab to name a few.
Looking to the future, we strive to understand and anticipate the concerns of our customers. It is our goal to adapt to help them deal with those concerns. Consequently, we are always looking for new avenues for revenue for our customers. By producing lenses as a Vision Service Plan Contract Laboratory and Vision Benefits of America Contract Laboratory, participating in various buying groups and internet ordering systems such as Vision Web and Eyefinity and introducing Lenstock (an internet portal for ordering finished and semi-finished lenses at the lowest prices) we accomplish this mission.
We have developed strong, customer-centered marketing programs which encompass advertising and distribution to selling products and services. This effort is enhanced by our knowledgeable and accomplished sales team and courteous, experienced customer service team, many of whom have worked in retail and have a keen understanding of our customer's perspective. Acknowledging the importance of communication, we have developed a website to strengthen our presence in the industry and to provide a forum where Eyecare Professionals can learn about Hirsch Optical and what we have to offer.
With the proliferation of next day messenger services and the "I need it now attitude" of modern consumers we recognized the opportunity to start a frame division. This was a perfect marriage with our lens fabrication operation and enabled Hirsch to offer customers brand name lens and frame package deals. Now, our customers are able to get a complete job without having to coordinate procuring a frame from one company and lenses from another company while eliminating the issue of whether to risk edging expensive premium lenses in their store or send it to a lab. We have created a situation where customers can keep frames on their frame boards for future sales and just call Hirsch Optical for the complete job. Its that easy!
